Hosted in partnership with the Buffalo History Museum, Buffalo Toronto Public Media invites you to a special screening of It Is Up To Us, a documentary produced by Stephen McKinley Henderson and Stephen Rosenthal.
Following the screening, audiences are invited to stay for a thoughtful post-screening discussion with the filmmaker.
About the Film
It Is Up To Us examines the history and lasting impact of segregation and racism in America, bringing forward historical truths that are often overlooked and exploring how they continue to shape our shared future. The film challenges the long-held “zero-sum” narrative—the idea that progress for one group requires loss for another—and highlights how fear and racism are deeply connected to issues such as health care, voting rights, housing, wealth inequality, and incarceration.
Central to the documentary is the reality that racism was embedded in federal, state, and local laws and practices—and that meaningful redress must involve those same systems. Looking ahead, the film introduces what author Heather McGhee calls the “Solidarity Dividend”: the collective benefits we all gain when communities come together to work toward common goals.
This screening is intended to spark reflection and encourage thoughtful, meaningful conversation among viewers. Community members, educators, and families are welcome to join us for this important evening of learning and dialogue.
