About this Event

Fiume o Morte! (2025) Igo Bezinović (Croatia)

In 1918, the Adriatic port city of Rijeka was left under the control of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. Enraged by the decision, hothead Italian aristocrat and poet Gabriele D’Annunzio led a bizarre insurgency with 186 mercenaries in Fiume. He then established a pro-Italian city-state under his total control. Igor Bezinović reconstructs the historical moment through dark comedy, while providing viewers with an important message from the past.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with SSEES academics.

This event is sponsored by SSEES Southeast European studies seminar series and Places, Identities and Memories (PIMs). It is organised as part of UCL 200.
