The Foodshed Project, a volunteer-run organization dedicated to uplifting the local food system in Greater Sudbury, is thrilled to announce an upcoming fundraising event. The organization will host a screening of the documentary Modified: A Food Lover's Journey into GMOs on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at The Sudbury Indie Cinema, with doors opening at 7pm. Tickets are $20, or $18 for Seniors/Students and are available at https://ticketing.useast.veezi.com/purchase/3345?siteToken=07z03adxxcrnm5jxsm8recft7mAs a special perk, attendees can enjoy 15% off their bill at Knowhere Public House (130 Elm St.) from 5pm-close on the event day with proof of ticket purchase. There will be a social gathering/mingle at Knowhere after the film too!
The Foodshed Project, founded in 2003, is a community-driven initiative with a mission to support local food and garden programs that improve health, foster economic development, and support the environment. The organization currently oversees two key projects:
1) The New Roots Collective: A youth-focused food system collaborative that operates a non-profit ¼-acre market garden in Wanup, and educates young people about farming, food skills, and food systems issues.
2) The Sudbury Community Garden Network: Supports over 30 community gardens and connects local gardeners and provides resources to empower and strengthen the gardening community.
The film screening event aims to raise awareness about critical issues surrounding GMOs and food systems while generating vital funds to support the Foodshed Project’s initiatives. In addition to the screening, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a silent auction and enjoy door prizes generously contributed by community partners.
There will also be a presentation by the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network, which brings together 15 groups to research, monitor and raise awareness about issues relating to genetic engineering in food and farming. CBAN members include farmer associations, environmental and social justice organizations, and regional coalitions of grassroots groups.
