About this Event

Please join us to mark the closing of Living in Brilliant Suspension: Didier William with a screening of a special edition of the upcoming documentary SAN GADE DYE, an artist portrait of the Haitian-American artist, followed by a conversation with the artist, the exhibition’s curator, and the filmmaker.

Artist Didier William, Curator and Associate Professor of Black Studies Jerry Philogene, and Emmy Award-winning producer and director Marlon Johnson will discuss the forthcoming film. “SAN GADE DYE” is a phrase in Haitian Creole. While there isn’t a single direct translation, the core of the phrase means “without looking at God” or “without God’s approval.” It implies a reckless or ungodly action.

Didier William is originally from Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He earned an BFA in painting from The Maryland Institute College of Art and an MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Yale University School of Art. His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, Bronx Museum of Art, The Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, The Museum at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, The Carnegie Museum, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, and The Figge Museum Art Museum.

Marlon Johnson is a nine-time Emmy award-winning producer and director. He has worked on award-winning documentary films exploring music and cultural issues like Symphony in D (2017), Emmy-winning Sunday’s Best (2010), and Coconut Grove: A Sense of Place (2005). The Ford Foundation commissioned Marlon to direct the documentary Breaking the Silence (2006), which chronicled the rise of HIV infection in the Black-American South. Marlon served as Head of Production and Senior Producer/Editor for Plum TV and helped create TeleAmerica Broadcasting Network. His documentary Deep City: Birth of the Miami Sound (SXSW 2014) aired nationwide on PBS. He has a B.S. in Communications from the University of Miami.
