Film Screening and Discussion: Untold Stories Part 2

Kayd Somali Arts & Culture invites you to Untold Stories Part 2 - a powerful documentary that delves into the experiences of the Somali community in Tower Hamlets. Among the earliest settlers were Somalilanders, who arrived as seamen and soldiers. This film shares the stories of both first and second generations of the Somaliland community, exploring their identity and community. This documentary was directed by Suher Sofi and funded by Tower Hamlets Council.

Suher Sofi is a British-Somali freelance producer and founder of JanFirst Productions - a newly established, Black female-led company dedicated to telling bold, nuanced stories for both stage and screen. She is currently developing several shows and a short film, while also making her directorial debut with a commissioned documentary. Suher previously produced the acclaimed play Desperate Times, which sold out its London run, toured nationally, including stops at Bristol Old Vic and Birmingham Hippodrome, and also won the Futures Festival at Pleasance theatre. Alongside her independent work, Suher works full-time in television. Her credits at BBC Studios Productions include Amol Rajan Interviews: Alan Sugar, Gary Lineker, Inside Our Minds (Series 2), and Life & Death Row (Series 4). She has also contributed to the editorial teams of BBC Rip Off Britain and The One Show. With a strong focus on platforming underrepresented voices, Suher is driven by a mission to tell stories for us, by us - amplifying stories too often overlooked and misunderstood in mainstream media.

The film screening will be followed by a conversation with Suher Sofi and several documentary participants.
