About this Event
Join us for a film night at St. Andrews
Fife Climate Hub in collaboration with St. Andrews Green Film Festival brings to you “The Ants and the Grasshopper” by Raj Patel, an award-winning filmmaker, writer and activist and Zak Piper co-director most known for “Life Itself” which won Critics Choice at Sundance Film Festival.
The story
The film follows a 10-year life journey of Anita Chitaya from a village in Malawi - a mother, an organic farmer and a womens’ activist trying to challenge strong-rooted believes about women-men divisions of power. The hard life in face of the climate crisis does not discourage her from her efforts to feed her village with organic food from her farm cooked in the village outdoor kitchen applying clay stoves – locally designed to use energy efficiently.
But Anita wants to do more. She recognises that the climate emergency can be stopped by people living in developing nations, so she travels to the USA to challenge climate deniers among the American farming community.
“How do you change someone’s mind about the most important thing in the world?” The film explores the possible answers and brings out contrasts in modern international society for the viewer to reflect on difficult aspects of climate change conversations.
Review: “I am blown away. You have found a hero of such grace and intelligence and power, and you had the good sense to get out of the way, centre the narrative on her. The film is obviously not about agriculture in the way I expected to be-- it’s much bigger than that...” Michael Pollan, Author and Director of the Knight Program in Science and Environmental Journalism.
