The Dance of the Sandhill Cranes Experience the magic of spring migration as we head out to find one of nature’s most iconic travelers! On Saturday, February 28th, we are heading north to search for the elegant Sandhill Cranes as they move through our region. These prehistoric-sounding birds are famous for their rattling calls and their spectacular mating dances, which involve high jumps and graceful wing-flapping. We are keeping our fingers crossed to catch a glimpse of these displays in the agricultural fields north of town!
We will gather at 7:15 AM at the Jax Farm & Ranch in northern Fort Collins to organize carpools before heading out for a driving tour. The trip will run from approximately 7:30 AM to 9:30 AM, allowing us to cover plenty of ground from the comfort of our vehicles. Please bring along your binoculars, a camera, or a spotting scope if you have one. We will have a scope set up and ready to share so everyone can get a close-up look at the cranes' striking crimson crowns.
Because this is one of our most popular annual outings, we have a special request for our community. If you were able to join us for this specific trip in 2025, please consider sitting this one out to allow others the chance to experience these incredible birds for the first time. Depending on interest, we may even add a second session on Sunday, March 1st! Stay tuned for registration details and further updates as we get closer to the date. We can't wait to share this unforgettable morning with you.
