FIELD TRIP: North Sebastian Conservation Area

North Sebastian Conservation Area (NSCA): Approximately one-third of the 407-acre preserve is made up of scrub habitat critical to the survival of the Florida Scrub-Jay, our only endemic songbird. Several jay families inhabit the scrub habitats of the NSCA. The NSCA hosts other habitats including sand and pine scrub, sand pine forest, scrubby flatwoods, mesic pine flatwoods, freshwater marsh, upland hardwood forest, freshwater ponds and lakes, all of which support a rich diversity of wildlife, including Gopher Tortoises and many bird species, that can be seen along the hiking trails.

Duration of trip: 2 hours.

Walking distance: 1 mile.

Degree of difficulty: Moderate because of loose sand and tree roots on some trails. Other trails have pavement. Trails may have wet spots if it has rained recently. Bring sunscreen, hats, good walking shoes and water.

Where you’d like participants to meet: Gibson St trailhead at Main St. intersection (behind the Sebastian Art Center/City Hall), west of US 1 in Sebastian.
