Missouri State University in cooperation with Vista Law Enforcement Training and Consulting, LLC, has scheduled this 40-hour POST-approved training program, titled “Field Training Officer (FTO) Development Program.”This training program is presented by current and retired law enforcement personnel who are experts in field training and managing field training officer programs. Topics include:
• The history and purpose of field training officer programs in law enforcement
• Modern field training models, adult learning theories, and human cognitive processes
• Legal and liability issues for field training officers or instructors, including “Vicarious Liability”
• Fundamental principles of effective leadership
• Different ways or methods to motivate new hires to meet organizational goals
• Essential aspects of report writing and how to review and edit reports appropriately
• How to effectively complete Daily Observation Reports (DORs) and training progress evaluations
• Proper methods to prepare and present effective performance reviews
• Strategies to recognize, address, and document training deficits
• Defining and recognizing, “Racism,” “Prejudice,” “Implicit Bias,” and “Stereotyping”
• De-escalation skills for volatile situations before the use of physical force
• Proper concepts in both everyday and emergency vehicle operations
• Proper technical methods, safety tactics, and communication techniques in vehicle stops
This program is designed for all first responders to become professional, knowledgeable, and competent field
training officers. Numerous practical scenario-based role-playing is utilized.
