About this Event
is a newer addition to the Indiana Birding Trail and one of west central Indiana's most diverse birding sites.
This Field Birding on the Indiana Birding Trail outing is designed for birders of all experience levels. First-time visitors and returning birders alike will find a relaxed, supportive way to explore DePauw Nature Park while making progress on the Indiana Birding Trail Checklist Challenge (see details below).
Wes Homoya will lead the trip, with a focus on seasonal breeding birds, habitat use, and strategies for birding a large, mixed habitat site effectively. DePauw Nature Park includes forest, old fields, wetlands, and stream corridors that support a wide variety of songbirds, raptors, and other species in early summer. The group will meet at 8:00 a.m. Eastern Time at the main parking lot and trailhead.
Registration
Registration is required and limited to 20 participants. Event tickets are $5 per person for Indiana Audubon members and $15 per person for non-members.
Accessibility
This outing includes moderate walking distances with frequent stops for birding. Trails at DePauw Nature Park include a mix of gravel, mown grass, dirt paths, and some uneven natural surfaces. Terrain is generally rolling, with gentle slopes in some areas.
Participants should be prepared for outdoor conditions and variable weather. Please bring your own binoculars. Spotting scopes and cameras are welcome.
Admission
There is no entrance fee to visit DePauw Nature Park.
Checklist Challenge
This field trip counts toward the , a free yearlong activity. Visit trail sites to earn points, collect badge stickers, and qualify for prizes through seasonal and year-end drawings in 2026.
