Description
Ice dyeing is the art of placing ice cubes on top of fabric, then adding liquid dye on top of the ice, letting the melting process dictate how the dye splits, bleeds, and ultimately strikes the fabric. This technique leads to surprising and delightful results every time! In this class you will learn the ice dyeing process as well as folding techniques to get the amazing patterns on a total of 2 yards of fabric and one optional item.
Krista lives in rural Manitoba, Canada and has been creating fibre art works for the past decade. She belongs to three professional groups: Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) an international group; Textile and Fibre Artists of Manitoba group; and the Mavericks, an Arizonan group, that all support her in her continued growth as an artist. Krista’s travels and nature inspire her artwork.
What Does the Student Bring to Class?
Two yards of prepared for dyeing fabric (needs to be natural fibres such as cotton, linen, silk) – approximately 4 fat quarters and 1-yard piece.
Prepared for Dyeing (PFD) fabric is a common term used by fabric sellers to indicate the fabric does not have sizing or other chemicals on the surface that could repel dyes. PFD fabric can be purchased online and at some local art stores, or you can prepare your fabric at home by pre-wash your natural fibre fabric in warm, soapy water without fabric softener.
1 bag of small ice cubes (8-10 pounds) in a cooler
Plastic bin – approximately 18” X 24” X 6”, with a lid
Metal rack large enough to cover the top of your bin (i.e. oven rack)
Permanent marking pen or pencil
Apron or wear old clothes
Scissors (to cut plastic and string)
Paper towels or rags to wipe up spills (You could also use pieces of fabric for bonus dyed pieces!)
Garbage bag big enough to hold your bin
Optional: white tee shirt or item of clothing to try dyeing
A Liquid Dye Kit is included in the registration fee.
