FesTeLOFF PLAY: Alumbra, lumbre de alumbre (FesTeLOFF Jury Winner 2023)

FesTeLOFF is the fringe edition of FesTeLõn. It is a chance to celebrate amateur and emerging UK-based theatre companies whose material is adapted from or inspired by Spanish and Latin American playwrights.

Synopsis: It is a poetical tale about humans' relationship and how we treat each other's when there are differences. It is a solo physical, textual, and sensory performance work where sound, music, voice, movement are in continuous communication throughout the story. It is a multi-role work where puppetry has a main role. Story pretends to be a poetical tale that talks about the internal conflicts a brain deals with when two oppose elements are confronted and the choices can make. It is the embodiment of the internal constraints between showing dehumanising or humanising behaviours. We look at the choice to create a limit and its consequences such the isolation of minorities and the risk to essentializing human beings into boxes.

It is also a dialogue between what is seen or not and what is inside and outside. Audience is another character. It is the witness and we aim to let the audience to make their own reflections triggered by those limits and the ones that will separate them from the space to the stage.

This is a project that was born from two interests: the combination between architecture, movement, voice and mind; and the theme of dehumanization. On top of that, my love for the text Mr President by Miguel Angel de Asturias, and his language was a trigger to explore and incorporate. The initial idea was presented to FesTeLõn and the project won the contest in 2023 which has been a wonderful journey. "Alumbra, lumbre de alumbre" premieres in FesTeLõn in 2024. The project is still in its research process; its dramaturgy and movement research has still long to go as at the moment funding is limited and we aim to conduct further research for the connection between mind, body, architecture to talk about limits placed by people when differences are higher than understanding.

About Rebeca Sierra: I am a neurodiverse Spanish “Performing Arts Crafter”. I have a vocation for giving birth to characters, making me feel passionate about life, people, relationships, movement, voice and character composition.

Through my experience and curiosity and will to be better than yesterday in areas of Body & Voice, I observe dynamics between audience, space, life & personal experience. I explore the interconnection to mental health, anatomy & body architecture as a tool for character composition. As a theatre maker I tell stories that bring fairness to minorities & as a pedagogue I aim to modify the curriculum to be more accessible to vulnerable children.

My work is defined as ‘social justice physical theatre’ using movement, voice, comedy & applying body puppetry & playful expression. I am personally committed to human rights, mental health, & young people, using theatre as a tool for social change. My work is uplifting & inclusive. I engage diverse audiences & encourage people to celebrate differences.

As an actor I worked in Film & TV, contemporary & classical theatre working for Pleasure Dome Theatre, Fusion Theatre, West Midlands Theatre, & Circo Rumba Ba. I set up my theatre company, “Hypocrites” in 2009 with whom I have directed/produced/performed Greco – Roman plays for secondary students in Roman amphitheatres, applying masks, chorus, ensemble & character composition.

In 2012 I moved to London to learn English. As a theatre maker, I devised a visual art piece with artist Sumer Erek’ and received support by Dangerosity and Festelon. I have also been Movement Director for Gulbenkian youth theatre in National Theatre Connections & wrote my own play selected for the Children environmental festival, Madrid. To date, I have mainly operated within charities such as The Flying Seagull Project, GOSH, schools, currently at Castell Hill Academy, hospices, prisons and theatre companies.

Sinopsís: Es un proyecto que nació de dos intereses: la combinación entre arquitectura, movimiento, voz y mente, y el tema de la deshumanización. Además, mi amor por el texto Mr. President de Miguel Ángel Asturias y su lenguaje fue un desencadenante para explorar e incorporar. La idea inicial fue presentada a Festelon y el proyecto ganó el concurso en 2023, lo cual ha sido un viaje maravilloso. "Alumbra, lumbre de alumbre" se estrenó en Festelon 2024. El producto aún está en proceso de investigación; su dramaturgia y la investigación del movimiento aún tienen un largo camino por recorrer, ya que en este momento no contamo s con financiación y aspiramos a profundizar en una investigación adicional sobre la conexión entre mente, cuerpo y arquitectura para hablar de los límites que las personas imponen cuando las diferencias son mayores que la comprensión.

Es un relato poético sobre la relación entre los humanos y cómo nos tratamos mutuamente cuando hay diferencias. Es una obra de performance física, textual y sensorial en solitario, donde el sonido, la música, la voz y el movimiento están en continua comunicación a lo largo de la historia. Es un trabajo multirrol en el que la marionetería tiene un papel principal. La historia pretende ser un relato poético que aborda los conflictos internos con los que lidia un cerebro cuando se confrontan dos elementos opuestos y las elecciones que se pueden tomar. Es la encarnación de las limitaciones internas entre mostrar comportamientos deshumanizantes o humanizantes. Observamos la elección de crear un límite y sus consecuencias, como la aislamiento de las minorías y el riesgo de esencializar a los seres humanos en categorías.

También es un diálogo entre lo que se ve o no, y lo que está dentro y fuera. El público es otro personaje, es el testigo, y buscamos permitir que el público realice sus propias reflexiones desencadenadas por esos límites y por los que los separan del espacio al escenario.

Sobre Receca Sierra: Soy una "artesana de las artes escénicas" española neurodiversa. Tengo una vocación más fuerte que yo misma para dar vida a personajes, lo que me apasiona por la vida, las personas, las relaciones, el movimiento, la voz y la composición de personajes.

A través de mi experiencia, curiosidad y el deseo de ser mejor que ayer en las áreas de cuerpo y voz, observo dinámicas entre el público, el espacio, la vida y la experiencia personal. Exploro la interconexión entre la salud mental, la anatomía y la arquitectura del cuerpo como herramientas para la composición de personajes. Como creadora de teatro, cuento historias que traen justicia a las minorías, y como pedagoga, busco modificar el currículo primario para que sea más accesible para niños vulnerables.

Mi trabajo se define como "teatro físico de justicia social", utilizando el movimiento, la voz, la comedia y aplicando la marionetería corporal y la expresión lúdica. Estoy personalmente comprometida con los derechos humanos, la salud mental y la juventud, utilizando el teatro como herramienta para el cambio social. Mi trabajo es inspirador e inclusivo. Involucro a audiencias diversas y animo a las personas a celebrar las diferencias.

Como actriz, he trabajado en cine y televisión, así como en teatro contemporáneo y clásico, colaborando con Pleasure Dome Theatre, Fusion Theatre, West Midlands Theatre y Circo Rumba Ba.
