Students across Europe are mobilising to protest Israel’s participation in the EU research programme Horizon Europe.The University of Bergen is involved in Horizon projects that include Israeli institutions as partners. Through these collaborations, European research funding is channelled to Israeli universities and organisations.
At the same time, Israel is carrying out the destruction of Gaza and the systematic dismantling of Palestinian life and institutions. Gaza’s universities have been bombed and destroyed, academics and students have been killed, and higher education has been deliberately targeted. In the West Bank, ongoing settlement expansion and military control continue the ethnic cleansing of Palestinian land and communities.
Israeli universities are not neutral actors. Many have long-standing partnerships with the Israeli military and arms industry, contributing research, technology and institutional support to systems of occupation and warfare.
When European universities continue research partnerships as usual, they help normalise these realities — the killing, the destruction, and the erasure of Palestinian education and society.
As students, we refuse to accept that our universities collaborate with institutions that are complicit in these structures.
We join the growing mobilisation across Europe demanding that Israel be suspended from Horizon Europe and that our universities end research collaborations with Israeli institutions.
