About this Event

his February, we have the honor of welcoming inaugural Birmingham poet laureate Salaam Green to Cookeville. On Feb. 2, beginning at 7:00 p.m., Green will read from The Other Revival, her book from Pulley Press. The Other Revival is a poetry collection centering on the Wallace House, a plantation house built in 1841 in Harpersville, Alabama. This house was constructed by thirty-nine enslaved people and worked by them and others for generations, and Green’s poems document the lives and histories now embodied by Black, white, and mixed-race descendants.
Frances McCue, Pulley Press's editor, writes of The Other Revival: "This book is important politically because it asks readers to consider other paths into history. As museums and support for art and artists are shut down, The Other Revival gives us all a new
model of keeping history."

Salaam Green is the inaugural poet laureate of historic Birmingham, Alabama, 2024-2025. She graduated from the University of Montevallo with an English degree and has a MS in Early Childhood Education from the University of North Dakota. Green has garnered residencies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, The Wallace House for Arts and Reconciliation, and Auburn University. She has spent more than 16 years as an arts educator, healer, and community leader.
Green's reading will be followed by an open mic and book signing. Poetry, spoken word, dramatic monologue, short prose, and songs are all welcome at the open mic. Plenty is located at 41 W. Broad St. in Cookeville. Arrive by 6:45 to sign up to perform.
