Annamarie Buchanan is a draftsperson living and working in Southwest Virginia. She graduated from Alma College with her BFA and received her MFA from Clemson University with an emphasis in drawing. Buchanan has curated over 50 exhibitions at venues including, but not limited to, William King Museum of Art, HollerHouse Gallery, Cherokee Museum - Walhalla, and the Arts Depot of Abingdon. She has juried countless art shows and has had the privilege of showcasing her own work in more than 30 refereed exhibits over the last ten years. Her work is currently represented by Griffin Gallery in Jonesborough, TN, HollerHouse Gallery in Bristol, VA, and by Curator Sabrina D. Land of Abingdon, VA.
Artist Statement:
My work utilizes illustrative techniques and ornithological symbolism to explore empathic and spatial relationships with the abject body, particularly the feminine body. I am interested in the ways that women adapt (either voluntarily or involuntarily) to their environments. Women are often required to adapt to their circumstances, making deeply personal decisions that can feel like tight-rope walking on a double-edged sword. Through drawing, I seek to make visible the often quiet negotiations of care, survival, and identity that shape women’s lives across generations.
