It’s time to gather again for a meal together—this time on Fat Sunday! Please join us for the fellowship of a potluck after worship on Sunday, March 2. This is the Sunday before Lent begins. We will provide plates and drinks. Please bring a dish to share. And if you’re willing to share the recipe, bring that too!
Fat Sunday, or Shove Sunday, is the Sunday before Ash Wednesday (March 5), the beginning of Lent, a season of fasting and penitence. Fat Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday is more well-known as Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday and marks the carnival celebration that leads up to the beginning of Lent. It is a time of eating richer, fattier foods before the fasting begins. Some congregations traditionally eat pancakes, symbolizing the using up of oil before Lent.
Fat Sunday is 50 days before Easter. It is called the Quinquagesima Sunday, the final Sunday before the start of Lent. But that’s a mouthful and you’d probably rather have a mouthful of good food on Fat Sunday.
