About this Event
The historic Tarlton Theatre is proud to present Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) as part of our new Fascism In Film series, featuring University of Wisconsin-Green Bay professors Jon Shelton and Zack Kruse presenting historical context and parallels between classic films throughout history and the present. ๐ฟ
Jon Shelton is professor and chair of Democracy and Justice Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. He is the author of "The Education Myth: How Human Capital Trumped Social Democracy" (Cornell University Press, 2023) and "Teacher Strike! Public Education and the Making of a New American Political Order", which was the winner of the International Standing Conference of the History of Education's First Book Award in 2018. Shelton served as the vice chair of the City of Green Bay's Equal Rights Commission and sits on the board of directors for the Labor and Working-Class History Association and the Wisconsin Labor History Society. He also serves as vice president for Higher Education of the American Federation of Teachers-Wisconsin.
Somewhere in time, along the misty mystic shores of Lake Michigan, Dr. Zack Kruse shambles and lurks, sifting through the sands of American subcultures. A scholar-maker at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Kruse is curious about how the politics and philosophies of the strange and unusual infiltrate our mundane lives. His book, "Mysterious Travelers", changed the conversation about Steve Ditko and the impact of comics on 20th-century American thought and politics. The Eisner Award-nominated book was recognized as one of the best books on comics in 2021 by The Comics Journal. As a creative, Kruse is a comics writer and a visual artist as well as a film director, writer, producer, and performer with national and regionally focused publications and productions. Kruse founded a well-regarded comic book convention, organized several academic conferences, and serves on the board of directors for the Sheboygan Film Festival. If it's weird, cast aside, forgotten, or has a lot of heart, Kruse is dragging it out of the fog.
