About this Event
The FASAFAS Story Lab, hosted by Steven Baboun / Studio Baboun and powered by, supported by the New York Council on the Arts and The Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute, is a workshop designed for queer Haitian, Caribbean, and MENA participants—as well as allies—to explore their identities through storytelling, monologue writing, movement, and experimental performance or video. Created in conjunction with Baboun’s new film FASAFAS, supported by the New York Council on the Arts, the lab offers a safe, intimate, and creative space where participants are invited to confront, reclaim, and celebrate the intersections of their lived experiences.
FASAFAS, Haitian Creole for ‘Face to Face,’ is a 3-channel art film centering Baboun’s queer Haitian, Syrian, and Palestinian identity. The film features the artist seated in environments crafted with textiles inspired by Haitian Vodou, his grandmother’s sewing practice, and visual aesthetics from both the Caribbean and the Middle East. It also reflects and responds to Haiti’s current sociopolitical climate, grounding the work in the urgent realities of the present
Excerpts from the film will be screened throughout the workshop and serve as a central point of reflection and inspiration. Participants will engage in a series of activities—including body movement, therapeutic exercises, writing, and performance—to explore their own narratives and identities.
The lab will feature special guests including , who will guide participants through healing and reflective practices; , dancer and body movement director, who will lead somatic and embodied exercises; and , founder and executive director of , who will join via Zoom for an info session on trans advocacy in the Haitian context. At the beginning, , owner of , will share a few words to bless and prepare the space for our time together.
The FASAFAS Story Lab is an invitation to gather face-to-face, to reflect, share, and create in community while activating stories rooted in identity and intersectionality.
