Come help get the farm ready for our 2026 program season! We'll have several projects* for you to choose from based on your skills & interests:
~ Planting the vegetable & flower gardens
~ Setting T-posts for a border electric fence (& possibly stringing the lines if time)
~ Re-setting the snow fence and cleaning/organizing the plant nursery area
~ Clean/organize the barn
~ Other projects may be added to the list
* Projects will depend on the number and mix of people and abilities.
Wear clothing and foot gear appropriate for the weather and working in the fields and gardens; work gloves to protect your hands are a good idea, as well as tick protection. We will only cancel if the weather is a hard rain or a dangerous weather event ... chilly/warm temps, light rain or mist are all workable. We have comfy places to take breaks from the weather and get cool/warm/dry. Bring your favorite camp chair if you wish, we have some seating here as well (and lots of comfy grass to lounge on.). 🙂
Bottled water and snacks provided; if you wish, bring a sack lunch if you plan to stay over lunchtime.
WAIVER: All volunteers will sign a once-yearly liability waiver.
COMMUNITY SERVICE OR CHURCH GROUPS are welcome! Please notify us ahead of time of plans to attend so we have projects ready for you. :)
CHILDREN are welcome to come and help, but must be supervised by parent or guardian at all times. (With guidance, kids can be some of the hardest workers!) :)
PLEASE, PLEASE click "Going" on the event page or otherwise DM us if you plan to attend, we need a clear idea of numbers and areas of skill and interest to plan for the day's projects. You can comment in the comment section of the event or via DM your areas of skill & interest. If you're a natural leader and would enjoy leading a work crew, let us know!
DIRECTIONS to FREEDOM FARM:
2484 W. River Rd.
Traverse City, Mi.
We are at the corner of River Rd. and Keystone Rd., where the new roundabout is closest to Chum’s Corners. NOTE: You cannot currently approach our location from Chum's Corners via Keystone Rd due to the Beitner Park Bridge being out from the recent floods. You can approach from Keystone Rd to the east and River Rd to the south.
The entrance to our driveway is on the River Rd. side of the roundabout. You’ll see two black mailboxes at the driveway entrance, just before you would enter the roundabout.
Come up the S-curved paved driveway, go over the railroad tracks past the first driveway (neighbors), then dead ahead you'll see our white "Welcome" sign with two smaller signs hanging underneath it. The drive splits to the right and left.
Our Freedom Farm sign points to the LEFT. Take that LEFT gravel drive, head up toward the BIG RED BARN on the RIGHT.
Look for the green and white “Visitor Parking” sign.
(**DON’T go to the left toward the big tan pole barn with the green roof, again, that's our neighbor's property.**😅)
You can park anywhere in front of the big red barn, next to the earth berm on your right. Come around past the berm into our yard where you will see the white apartment building.
Come down the hill to the yard by the horse barn where we will welcome you, check everyone in, sign waivers and make work assignments before we head out to begin work on the farm.
