Step into the boots of a garden architect and discover that you don’t need a vast field to grow a giant imagination! In this whimsical, hands-on camp, we transform everyday objects into extraordinary ecosystems as we explore the top-to-bottom science of plants. From dissecting seeds to find the baby plant, to engineering sunflower houses and bean tunnels, your camper will learn that gardening is a feat of living construction.
The journey begins with a deep dive into the biological magic of seeds, where kids perform dissections to locate the baby plant and use clear germination bags to witness the first roots and shoots emerge in real-time. To ensure their garden thrives, campers engage in hands-on chemistry by conducting natural pH tests, using red cabbage juice indicators or vinegar fizz tests to analyze soil acidity, and shaking up dirt-shake jars to visualize the layers of sand, silt, and clay. We’ll spend the week investigating the strength of roots and the speed of shoots, while proving that anything from a recycled bucket to an old work boot can become a thriving home for nature. Whether they are designing a pizza patch, or mapping out a secret garden retreat, your young grower will combine botanical art and outdoor engineering to create a world that is uniquely their own!
Camp Activities:
Storytime Exploration: Each camp will begin with an interactive and exploratory storytime. We will discuss our theme of the day, read correlated stories and poems, sing songs, and explore the farm. We will use seasonal literature to deepen the connection between the campers and Rosewood Farm’s landscape.
Arts & Crafts: Our arts and crafts curriculum is reimagined as a bridge between scientific observation and creative expression, effectively transforming the entire farm into a vibrant outdoor studio. Campers will treat the landscape as their palette, gathering inspiration from the textures of the barnyard and the colors of the surrounding nature. By integrating natural elements, children don't just observe the farm; they use its raw materials to engineer functional art that gives back to the ecosystem they are studying.
Cooking: Our campers will have the opportunity to create and enjoy farm-to-table snacks using hands-on engagement with seasonal produce. Not only will we be able to enjoy a delicious snack, we will have the freedom and creativity to produce our own themed-snack and enjoy it with our friends!
Game Time: We will focus on developing gross motor skills like balance, coordination, and strength through high-energy, themed games! These activities, such as barnyard tag and harvest relay, are designed to build gross motor strength and coordination while fostering a sense of teamwork and fun!
What to Bring:
Sunscreen (please apply before camp starts, full day camp will have sunscreen applied again midday)
Bug spray
Lunch (we will be supplying a nutritious themed snack and have beverages available, but please provide a lunch for full day camp)
