About Faoileán:
In the Irish language, the word Faoileán [FWEEL-AWN] means seabird; or, one who circles or spins, or one who cries, or wild one. Inspired by the gravity and multiplicity of this word and its native language, Nathan Bishop, Connor Brogan, and Rob Helsel adopted Faoileán as the name for their Philadelphia-based Irish folk outfit.
Faoileán challenges and experiments with the limits of modern Irish folk music, from executing tender verses in five-hundred-year-old ballads, to gliding and soaring through original and handed-down melodies, to ripping the very fabric of tunes apart through intensity and atmosphere. Nathan helms the bowed instruments and commands a tapestry of tunes, Rob solidifies rhythms through guitars and banjos, and Connor adds textures and dimension through an assortment of string and bellow instruments. Rob and Connor share and trade vocal leads and accompaniments. The trio released their debut full-length album last year, Far Hills, and often play at the MAAS Building in Philadelphia and Flounder Brewing Company in New Jersey, along with many venues in between.
About Zosha Warpeha:
Zosha Warpeha is a Brooklyn-based composer-performer working in a meditative space at the intersection of contemporary improvisation and folk traditions. Using bowed stringed instruments alongside her own voice, her long-form compositions explore transformations of time and tonality. She performs primarily on Hardanger d’amore, a sympathetic-stringed instrument closely related to the Norwegian Hardanger fiddle. Her current work is informed by the cyclical forms, rhythmic elasticity, and the physical momentum of Nordic folk music.
Her debut solo album, silver dawn, was released in May 2024 on Relative Pitch Records and has been praised as “a breathtaking series of dialogues between Warpeha and her instrument; tradition and experimentation; community and place” (I Care if You Listen). Warpeha’s work has been supported by the US-Norway Fulbright Foundation, Jerome Foundation, and Minnesota State Arts Board.
