What can you expect on our Fordsburg (Foodsburg) tour.
We start out walk by visiting Shalimar delights – one of the biggest supermarkets for traditional sweet meats (Indian confectionary, with a fudge like consistency).
From there we depart through the streets of Fordsburg to explore the rich culture and history. Our first stop: Lilian rd. studios with an incredible mosaic by Hannelie Coetzee. We walk down the road to Archies – a quaint dive bar serving cold beers and polony sandwiches!
Fordsburg is the home of food in Joburg, so it is only fitting that we look at how food supplies and grocers influenced life on the Witwatersrand.
We stroll past the Oriental Plaza, a famous shopping attraction in Jozi – but how did it come to be and what does forced removals have to do with the plaza?
Last on out history list is the Hamidia Mashid, one of the oldest Masjid’s in Joburg and it links to Mahatma Gandhi’s passive resistance movement. We explore Gandhi’s time in South Africa.
Having worked up an appetite we will dive right into the food culture. Fordsburg is a hot pot of melting cultures, and it is on display in the area around the market square. n one block you will find Turkish, Pakistani, Greek, Syrian and South-Indian cuisine.
Our stops include:
House of Schwarma,
House of Baklava,
Dosa hut, not only for Dosa’s but also South Indian food, brilliant to take home.
And Turkish grill for the best (and cheapest) Dohner Kebabs in Joburg!
We also explore the market for street food (think samosas, spring rolls, pies, roti, etc.) as well as the most amazing freshly squeezed juices.
With full bellies and shopping bags we head back to the cars!
Bring shopping bags - you will be buying plenty of food stuff.
