Fan Chang Tien: Rhythm of the Southern Brush
From 16 October 2026 to 31 January 2027, step into the world of Fan Chang Tien, one of Singapore’s most influential ink masters. Extending beyond his well-known legacy as the “Gardener” who nurtured generations of Singapore artists, Fan Chang Tien: Rhythm of the Southern Brush offers a fresh perspective on the artistic, intellectual and personal pursuits that shaped his enduring influence on ink art in Singapore.
Trace Fan’s journey across Guangdong, Shanghai, Bangkok and Singapore, and discover how migration and cultural exchange influenced his artistic practice and philosophy. Through paintings, calligraphy, poetry, seal carvings and archival materials, explore the many facets of Fan as a scholar-artist, poet, philanthropist and cultural figure, guided by a deep commitment to self-cultivation, integrity and generosity.
Featuring over 70 works and archival materials, the exhibition at National Gallery Singapore explores how these values extended beyond Fan’s artistic practice to his dedication to teaching, mentorship and giving back to the community.
