Family Workshop: Painting a Home with Kathy Tynan

Artist Kathy Tynan will show children and young people how to paint in layers with reference to traditional steps in underpainting.
About this Event

Each participant will receive a simple cardboard character. They will be invited to decorate them with paint and to paint a home for them on paper. Emphasis will be on the description of ideas through paint, over making a finished painting. This exercise encourages young people to consider painting as an opportunity to create an environment. By responding to the discerned needs of their cardboard character, the participants will use paint in an open and pragmatic way.

This is a workshop for children of all ages; no experience is necessary. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian (parents and guardians do not need to book a space). Confirmation of attendance will be requested closer to the time.

This event is part of Gallery Takeover 2026, a four-day summer programme where the Gallery is dedicated to artistic activity, workshops and conversation.

is an artists’ studio complex and contemporary art gallery in Dublin City Centre. The Gallery presents five exhibitions annually of newly commissioned work by Irish and international artists. This is supported by a programme of free talks, tours, screenings and workshops.

The workshop will take place in our street-facing gallery space at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios. A team member will be at the entrance to check you in and support throughout visit, they will be wearing red lanyards.

The Temple Bar area is a busy area with a new level path that leads to the entrance door, which has a 5cm step, the gallery is otherwise step free. The space is bright with natural light and will contain freestanding sculpture, tables and chairs. The event space and street outside can be busy and louder at times. The space remains open to visitors during the workshop. A large single room bathroom with grab rails is next to the gallery space.
