Come celebrate your heritage by attending our FREE EVENT: Family History Celebration on Saturday Oct. 26th from 10-2 p.m. Learn about different technologies that will aid you in your family history adventure. Be inspired by cultural music, dance, food, and stories as you connect with other family history lovers!
Guest Appearances:
-Stuart Scott from Richmond, VA. He is an avid family historian and will discuss the why, how, and when of family history and genealogy research.
-Barry Lee, a 37 year retired radio show host for WINC-FM, will share his personal experience with familysearch.

CLASS
1. Introduction to Family Search – Danya Dale will introduce you to FamilySearch.org, a free online genealogy search and family tree site. Learn how to find a variety of your ancestor's name indexed records/photos/documents/memorial markers and more. Also learn how to attach them to your Family Tree. Sign up for a free FamilySearch account and access 60 billion searchable records from around the world.
2. Find Military Records – Cindy Norton will show you to how to find your ancestor's military records at the National Archives in Washington, DC.
3. Bring Old Photos to Life – Tom Sunde will demonstrate the benefits of colorizing black and white photos to enhance their images using the My Heritage program.
4. Discover RootsTech Trainings – Maggie Ehrenburg will introduce you to Roots Tech and their large inventory of online training modules for conducting genealogical research that you can access from home.
5. Use AI to Write your Family Story – Tim Palmer will paint a picture of the future role of artificial intelligence (Al) in genealogical research.
6. Be Inspired by a Genealogical Hunt – Brenda Nelson, retired educator, genealogist and author, will take you on her quest to find a branch of her family tree that was lost through divorce. Her quest began in Virginia, then took her to West Virginia, which led her to Tennessee, then back to Virginia once again. She also published a book about the only African American cemetery in Winchester entitled, "The life and Times of Robert
Orrick", named after Robert Orrick (1827-1902), owner of the land.
7. Explore the Daughters of the American Revolution Records – A DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) representative will demonstrate how to conduct research on their Genealogical Research System, or GRS for short, DAR's online genealogical research portal. Here you will find collections of databases DAR has made available online. These include the Ancestor Database, Member Database, Descendants Database, DAR Library Catalog, DAR Genealogical Records Committee database and additional online tools. Please bring a laptop or iPad to fully participate.

Organizations Table Exhibitors:
The Clarke County Historical Association’s mission is to help preserve the historic resources and records of Clarke County, Virginia, and to foster their use, understanding, and enjoyment through stewardship and education. Its vision is to join with others in keeping alive the history of Clarke County.
The Winchester-Frederick County Historical Society is a non-profit organization of individuals interested in the preservation and expansion of knowledge about the historical and cultural heritage of the Northern Shenandoah Valley, with geographical focus on the City of Winchester and Frederick County, Virginia.
The Stewart Bell, jr. Archives housed in the Handley Regional Library in Winchester, is a local history and genealogy center jointly operated by the Handley Regional Library and the Winchester-Frederick County Historical Society. Their holdings include a variety of materials documenting the history of the Lower Shenandoah Valley from 1732 to the present, with an emphasis on the City of Winchester and Frederick County, Virginia.
The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will exhibit materials and information about their organization and their core mission: to promote patriotism, preserve American history and secure America’s future through better education for children.
The Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) will be invited to set up a table exhibit and or presentation. The Sons of the American revolution honor our revolutionary war ancestors by promoting patriotism, serving our communities and educating and inspiring future generations about the founding principles of our country. Both the DAR and SAR representatives will be dressed in costumes of the Civil War era.
Shenandoah Germanic Heritage Museum, Hottel/Keller Memorial Inc. The HKMI is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to the preservation of the historical and cultural heritage of our early Germanic immigrants into the great
valley of Virginia, through museum and living history exhibits and programs, archives and genealogies for the members of the organization and the public. Vicky Mongold will represent the Shenandoah Germanic Heritage Museum.
Jim Coots at Mt. Hebron Cemetery in Winchester will share some valuable information regarding cemeteries as resources for family history researchers. He will share information about historical figures that are buried in Mt. Hebron Cemetery. In addition, he will show you how to access cemetery records.
The Josephine School Community Museum. Clarke County’s African American heritage and history are preserved and celebrated through the restoration of the Josephine City School as a museum and cultural center. Located in Berryville, Virginia, this preconstruction-era schoolhouse serves as a powerful beacon of hope and self-determination. Norma Johnson represents the museum.
Byron C. Smith represents the Newtown History Center. With the town of Stephens City, Virginia, as its focus, the Foundation seeks to interest and engage residents, visitors, scholars and students in the events, lifeways and material culture of the region. We also strive to promote the preservation of the buildings, artifacts and landscapes that are associated with the history of the town of Stephens City.
