Family, Gender, Sex: A Visual Anthropology by Dr Lee Mackinnon
About this Event
This one day course examines representations of family, sex and gender in visual anthropology. We consider how singular understandings of ‘family’ can mask the complexity and nuance of diverse practices and groupings, revealing a wish to ‘universalise’ concepts that are culturally specific. Modernist practices take us on a journey through 19th century colonial archives and fairs, to global modernist photographic exhibitions which rely upon the transparency and indexicality of the photographic image as irrefutable evidence.
Dr Lee Mackinnon is a Senior Lecturer in Photographic History and Theory at the University of the Arts London (LCC). She has written extensively on image culture, particularly on photography’s role in shaping contemporary identity, cultural norms and understandings of difference.
