Passionate about fostering the bond between children and their pets in order to ensure a safe and happy home for both, Dr. Ruiz has devoted her career to educating families on the importance of understanding dog body language and behavior. "Becoming a mother even further highlighted how crucial a positive and respectful bond between a child and their pet is to keeping them both safe," says Dr. Ruiz. She believes dogs should not have to be tolerant of children, and instead, children and their pets can live in harmony when body language is understood and boundaries are respected. During her years in practice, she has witnessed numerous preventable instances of children being bitten by dogs due to a lack of supervision and understanding of canine signals. These incidents not only pose physical risks, but also strain the human-animal bond, both of which can lead to heartbreaking decisions such as rehoming or euthanasia. Dr. Ruiz aims to change this narrative through her children's book, which provides engaging and accessible lessons on respecting dogs and interpreting dog behavior.
