About this Event

Friends of the Art Museum of the Americas (FAMA) invite you to our Members-Only Event: Enjoy brunch refreshments and brief remarks by Deborah Ziska, president of FAMA, and Adriana Ospina, director of the Art Museum of the Americas (AMA) in the sun-filled loggia. This will be followed by tours of two new exhibitions: "The Skin of Discomfort" with Chilean artist Paola Podesta and "The Invisible Pr*son: Imprisoned Artists of the Americas" with OAS Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression Pedro Vaca Villarreal.

We are limited to 25. If you or your guest are not already members of FAMA, you may join here on Eventbrite in the ticket section or on our website. Support cultural diplomacy locally and throughout the Americas!

The exhibition of textile patchworks by Paola Podestá of Valparaíso, Chile, uses its primary medium for aesthetic and metaphorical reasons. She addresses issues like feminism, fracking, the depletion of natural resources, immigration, and mental health, using patchwork to reinforce the idea that—much like the fabric scraps in a quilt—our struggles are interconnected and must be addressed collectively to build a more just and equitable future for all. She conveys a communal alignment with the OAS's core objectives: human rights, sustainability, and social justice.

"The Invisible Pr*son: Imprison Artists of the Americas" brings together artists who create from Cuban prisons. Its title alludes to the effect these prisons have on society as a whole, fostering fear of gathering, protesting, or even expressing dissent on social media. The OAS Office of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression monitors the state of artistic freedom of expression in the hemisphere and observes that reprisals against art persist. Among these restrictions on artistic freedom of expression, the prolonged imprisonment of artists—most of them young—is particularly troubling. In this context, Cuba stands out as the only State in the hemisphere that currently keeps several artists imprisoned.
