Overview

You click accept. You hand over data. Did you read the terms & conditions?

We are hosting a free, hands-on zinemaking workshop for Cornwall-based creators aged 18+, exploring privacy, consent, personal data, AI, digital identity, social media culture, and the hidden systems shaping everyday online life.

Taking place in Falmouth and Penzance, this free 4-hour workshop invites participants to respond creatively to the digital world we now live inside — and the terms we accept without fully understanding.

Led by Kitty McEwan — also known as @midnakit — a UK-based illustrator, comic artist and zinester, the session will use collage, comics, illustration, poetry, writing, cut-up text, digital tools and DIY publishing methods to help participants create original zine work connected to Terms & Conditions by Future Artists.

This is not just a workshop. It is a chance to make new work in a supportive creative environment, meet other local creators, and contribute to a wider independent publication project. Work created through these workshops will be considered for inclusion in a printed zine edition developed alongside other workshops across Devon and Cornwall.

The finished publication is intended to be shared publicly and featured at national and international zine festivals, giving participants the opportunity to have their work travel beyond the workshop and reach wider audiences.

No previous zinemaking experience is needed. We welcome creators from a wide range of backgrounds, practices and levels of experience.

This project is supported by Arts Council England.

About the Workshop Leader

The workshop will be led by Kitty McEwan@midnakit — a UK-based illustrator, comic artist and zinester specialising in character design, comics and multimedia narratives.

Kitty creates the twice-weekly comic strip Gurt Noodles, which has been featured on the Webtoon front page as both a Hot Series and Hidden Gem. Her work also includes Lunchspiracy on Webtoon and The Stonehouse Detectives, published in Plymouth-based newspaper The Stonehouse Voice, alongside several self-published works.

Her editorial and comic illustration clients include the University of Sheffield, 3D design app Mental Canvas, and local eco-conscious organisation Precious Plastic Plymouth. She is also a published book cover and picture book artist.

Overview of the Day

Across the 4-hour workshop, participants will be introduced to zine culture, DIY publishing and the themes of Terms & Conditions, including privacy, consent, personal data, AI, digital identity and social media culture.

The session will move from ideas and discussion into practical making. Participants will explore examples of zines and visual storytelling, generate ideas through short prompts, and begin creating their own zine material using collage, drawing, writing, comics, poetry, found text, cut-up techniques, digital tools or their own preferred creative methods.

There will be a lunch / comfort break partway through the day, followed by time to complete or refine work. The workshop will end with an informal sharing and a short discussion about how individual pieces can become part of a wider publication connected to Terms & Conditions by Future Artists.

Who Is This For?

This workshop is for Cornwall-based creators aged 18+ who are interested in:

  • Privacy in a digital age
  • Personal data as a commodity
  • AI and everyday online life
  • Digital communication and social media culture
  • Zines, comics, collage, illustration, poetry, writing and DIY publishing
  • Making creative work in response to contemporary life
  • Exploring how creativity can question the systems we live inside

You do not need to be an experienced zinemaker to take part. We welcome artists, writers, illustrators, designers, poets, comic makers, digital artists, photographers, collage artists, students, emerging creatives and anyone curious about making work in response to these themes.

What to Bring

Please bring your normal art-making materials — digital or analogue — and anything you like to create with.

This might include:

  • Sketchbooks, notebooks or loose paper
  • Pens, pencils, markers, paints or drawing tools
  • A laptop, tablet, iPad or digital drawing device
  • Magazines, newspapers, printed images, photographs or collage materials
  • Text, poems, notes, screenshots, found words or fragments you want to work with
  • Zines, comics, books, artwork or visual references that inspire you
  • Any existing work-in-progress you may want to develop during the session

You are also warmly encouraged to bring zines, artwork or printed material you would like to share with the group.

Basic zinemaking materials will be available, but bringing your own materials will help you work in a way that feels natural to your own creative practice.

What You’ll Leave With

By the end of the workshop, participants will have:

  • Explored the themes of Terms & Conditions through discussion and creative exercises
  • Learned more about zine culture, DIY publishing and independent print-making
  • Started or completed original zine material
  • Met other Cornwall-based creators
  • Contributed to a wider publication project connected to Terms & Conditions by Future Artists
  • Gained insight into how zines can be shared, published, distributed and exhibited
