Falling in love with Falling

Contact Improvisation Workshop
with Vega Luukkonen and Mathilde Mensink
for dancers and movers with experience
--- We invite you on a journey exploring lifts, flights and falling as integral parts of the dance, discovering greater freedom, lightness and ease in movement.
By changing our relationship to falling; learning to trust, organize and even enjoy falling, lifts and flights stop feeling like separate techniques and instead emerge naturally from the dance. ---

MORE about the WORKSHOP
Through release, alignment, body mechanics and an embodied understanding of gravity and momentum, we cultivate a body that is both soft and organized, allowing movement to flow with less effort and greater continuity.
As each dancer finds support in their own structure and in the space around them, contact becomes lighter, more responsive and spacious, opening new possibilities for moving together.
Together we will investigate weight-sharing, counterbalance, fluid lifts and seamless transitions, allowing flights, landings and moments of support to emerge naturally from the dance.
Rooted in curiosity, playfulness and care, we offer clear technical tools while creating an inclusive space, where we can experiment, challenge ourselves and enjoy the process of discovering new possibilities together.
We will work with the solo-body movement as well as in duets. There will be technical exercises, but also plenty of time for integration and playfulness through dancing.
The workshop is designed for people with some prior experience with CI or solid experience in other movement diciplines. If you have quesitons, feel invited to reach out to us.

About the TEACHERS
VEGA LUUKKONEN
Movement Educator, Dancer, Facilitator is a dancer, performance-artist & bodyworker made in Finland.
She studied dance & theatre pedagogy in Helsinki at the Theatre Academy of Finland, where she completed her Master´s degree in 2008. Currently she is co-hosting ROOTED IN MOTION, 10 months modular training in Contact Improvisation in Berlin with her long-term colleague, Hugh Stanier.
Vega is an expert in Contact Improvisation (CI), and teaches at festivals, events & workshops across the world. She has danced Contact Improvisation since she was a teenager, and developed first her practice in the Finnish contact community.
After her studies she begun travel & teach internationally, having now more than 30 years of experience with Contact Improvisation. Her movement is informed & inspired by contemporary dance, somatics, aikido, floor-work, soft acrobatics, partnering & developmental movement patterns.
Recently, she is more & more interested in deeper understanding of the underlying principles of Contact Improvisation, leading into fine tuning, attention to detail, deep listening, and presence.
She seeks ways to facilitate understanding of movement fundamentals, while staying connected to our own interest & journey of exploration, where curiosity can stay most alive to discovery. Her classes are playful, physical, fun and creative.
She also works with collective scores & composition; expanding out from duets into trios & group-compositions, seeing also solo-improvisation as vital part of contact improvisation. She understands dance as a combination of technique & flow; form & freedom; being & doing.
MATHILDE MENSINK
Dancer, singer, and dance teacher/facilitator.
Mathilde holds a BA in Contemporary Dance Practices from the Iceland University of the Arts. Since graduating, she has worked primarily with Contact Improvisation, somatic practices, teaching, and facilitation.
She first encountered Contact Improvisation in Copenhagen in 2013 and has returned to it ever since as a source of nourishment, play, community, and curious exploration. Her work is informed by contemporary dance, somatic practices and music, alongside an ongoing interest in developing sustainable practices that integrate technical precision with nervous system awareness, playfulness and creative expression, ultimately inviting a greater sense of wholeness.
She enjoys holding space for deep immersions, the unknown, and the quirky, playful, wild and tender aspects of embodied experience. She has taught Contact Improvisation in Copenhagen and Berlin and has been an active part of the international CI community in Berlin. Alongside dance, she teaches and facilitates movement, music, and somatic practices for both children and adults.
