Join us in welcoming Forrest Banks. His presentation topic is The Tootie McGregor Fountain formerly located at Historic Five Points. The Five Points in Fort Myers is a historical five-way intersection.
The fountain was originally installed in the summer of 1912 at the famous Five Points intersection. This busy convergence point near downtown Fort Myers was formed by five streets:
o McGregor Boulevard
o Cleveland Avenue (US 41)
o Main Street
o Carson Street
o Anderson Avenue (now Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard).
In its early days, the fountain served a very practical dual purpose. Positioned right in the middle of the intersection, it acted as a traffic "turn-about" roundabout, a horse watering trough, and even featured a small, low-level built-in water bowl specifically for dogs.
