Why Plant Native Seedlings in the Fall?
-Michigan autumns have historically received more precipitation than our springs. Water is a key factor in establishing a healthy tree seedling after being transplanted.
-Planting before the first frost provides time for your new plants to develop root systems after being transplanted. Root growth can (under certain conditions) continue until the ground freezes.
-In the Grand Traverse region, our sandy soils are conducive to fall plantings because the risk of frost heaving (expansion and contraction of soil due to water freezing and thawing) is reduced.
-Early-blooming species established in the fall provide dynamic color and beauty to your landscape - as well as supporting pollinators year-round!
