**Get your hands in the clay and discover the creative possibilities of ceramics!**
Join ceramic artist Lynda Feman and artist and instructor Laura Tarnoff for an immersive, five-Sunday ceramics experience at Laura’s home art studio in Eldorado, just outside Santa Fe. Whether you’re brand new to clay or have some experience and want to expand your skills, this class offers the opportunity to explore, experiment, develop your ideas, and create pottery that reflects your own style and imagination.
Working with both **the potter’s wheel and hand-building techniques**, you’ll learn how to transform simple clay into beautiful, functional, or sculptural pieces. From bowls, cups, and vases to more complex forms like teapots and lidded vessels, you’ll discover how to build, shape, refine, assemble, and finish your work.
This is a hands-on, process-oriented class where you’ll have time to explore multiple projects, learn new techniques, and develop your own creative direction with guidance from two experienced artists. You don’t need to be an expert—or even have touched clay before. Curiosity and a willingness to experiment are all you need!
### What You’ll Explore
**Wheel Throwing**
Learn the foundations of working on the potter’s wheel, including wedging and preparing clay, centering, pulling walls, shaping forms, and cutting your work off the wheel. As your skills develop, you’ll explore trimming and refining your pieces to bring your ideas to life.
**Hand Building & Sculptural Forms**
Discover the versatility of hand building through slab construction, coils, pinch pots, and other techniques. Learn how to combine forms, create components, and assemble more complex pieces using slipping and scoring. You’ll explore both functional pottery and sculptural approaches, giving you the freedom to follow your own ideas.
**Creating & Assembling Your Pieces**
As you develop your projects, you’ll learn how to put the pieces together, create handles, spouts, and lids, and assemble forms such as vases, teapots, and other unique vessels. We’ll guide you through the process of refining your work and preparing it for firing.
**Surface Design, Texture & Glazing**
One of the most exciting stages of ceramics is discovering how to finish your work. You’ll be introduced to glazing and surface decoration, exploring brush techniques, layered designs, slip trailing, sponge textures, and other ways to add color, pattern, and personality to your pieces. You’ll learn how to approach surface design thoughtfully and make choices that enhance your individual creations.
### Your Five-Sunday Creative Journey
Each session builds on the previous one, taking you from your first ideas and experiments through construction, refinement, firing, and glazing.
- **Sunday, November 8 — Foundations & Exploration:** Get started with the wheel and hand building. Experiment with different techniques, begin multiple projects, and explore functional and sculptural possibilities.
- **Sunday, November 15 — Developing & Assembling:** Refine your ideas, create final components, and learn how to assemble more complex forms, including handles, lids, and spouts. We’ll also discuss glaze choices and prepare work for its first firing.
- **Sunday, November 22 — Refinement & Surface Design:** Finish constructing and refining your pieces, explore surface decoration, and begin learning about glazing and finishing techniques.
- **Sunday, November 29 — No Class:** Enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday while your work progresses through the firing process.
- **Sunday, December 6 — Glazing & Finishing:** Concentrate on glazing and surface finishing, making the final choices that bring your pieces together before the last glaze firing.
- **Sunday, December 13 — Critique & Pickup:** Gather to look at the finished work, share your experience, celebrate what you’ve created, and take your pottery home!
*Please note: Ceramics involves several stages of drying and firing, so some work will progress in the kiln between sessions. New projects and construction will need to wrap up early enough to allow time for finishing and firing.*
### A Creative Experience with Personal Guidance
One of the special things about this class is the opportunity to work with two instructors in a welcoming, home-studio environment. You’ll have room to experiment, ask questions, troubleshoot challenges, and learn at your own pace while receiving guidance throughout the process.
Ceramics invites you to slow down, work with your hands, embrace the unexpected, and discover what happens when you give yourself permission to create. Every piece of clay offers possibilities, and sometimes the most interesting results come from trying something you’ve never done before.
Come explore the satisfying, tactile world of clay, develop new skills, and leave with handmade pieces that are uniquely yours.
