Join Edgewood docents for a Fall bird hike. We'll use the free Merlin Bird ID app to help us identify birds along the trail.
About this Event

Fall brings a mix of birds to Edgewood as they pause here or settle in for the winter. We’ll explore how native plants support these seasonal visitors by providing essential food through the colder months.

We’ll look and listen for birds along the trail, learning to recognize them by sight and sound. Binoculars are highly recommended to enjoy the hike.

We plan to spend a little time using the free Merlin Bird
ID app to help identify the birds we hear and see along the trail. If you’d
like to follow along, please download the Merlin Bird ID from merlin.allaboutbirds.org/download or the App Store before the hike, and be sure to install the US: West Coast pack within the app while
connected to Wi-Fi so it works smoothly offline. If you'd like to keep a
personal list of the species we encounter, create a free Cornell Lab account
when prompted. If you run into any trouble with the setup, just arrive a few minutes early and we’ll be happy to help you get sorted before we head out!

This hike is suited for adults and interested older children who want to deepen their appreciation of Edgewood’s birdlife and the ecosystems that sustain it.

We’ll cover 2-3 miles at a moderate pace with plenty of stops for observation. Total elevation gain is around 400 feet. Note that Edgewood’s many narrow trails cannot accommodate strollers.

Wear sturdy shoes and bring water. Consider sunscreen, a hat, and snacks. Restrooms and water are available only at the picnic area near the Sylvan Trailhead. Please plan ahead.

We will still hike in light showers, but heavy rain cancels this hike.

All participants, including children, must be registered individually and have approved the liability waiver through Eventbrite.

Group size is very limited. Please cancel your reservation if you are unable to attend so others may have a chance to join us.

We ask folks to register for our hikes in order to keep group sizes manageable, but often we have a few no shows. You are welcome to drop-in 10 minutes before the beginning of the hike to see if there might be extra room. Unfortunately, we cannot confirm whether there will be space for drop-in hikers in advance. Thank you for your understanding.
