Fall & Winter Cover Crop Management
About this Event
The last part of our three-session Seasonal Cover Crop Management Series exploring how to build healthy soil year-round.
Our fall & winter session asks: How can cover crops build and protect soil during the dormant season? Together, we’ll explore how cool-season cover crops can be integrated into small-scale farm systems to stabilize soil, manage crop residue, support soil biology, and prepare fields for spring production.
We’ll begin with a deep dive into fall and winter cover crop design, including variety selection, timing, site preparation, seeding strategies, and residue management. Then, we’ll head into the fields to observe seasonal cover crops in action and discuss the tools and decision-making processes that support successful establishment and long-term soil health.
Whether you’re a farmer, land steward, or simply curious about soil stewardship, this workshop offers practical insights to help you integrate fall and winter cover crops into your growing practices.
YOU'LL DISCOVER:
- Fall & Winter Cover Crop Design: Learn how to select cover crop species and mixes based on production goals, soil health priorities, seasonal timing, and site conditions.
- Field-Based Learning: Experience cover crops growing in Oxbow’s production fields and observe different species, mixes, and management approaches in action.
- Seasonal Soil Stewardship: Explore practical considerations including crop residue management, site preparation, seeding timing, and how cover crops fit into broader organic farming systems and crop rotations.
ABOUT YOUR FACILITATOR
Anthony Reyes brings over 17 years of experience at the intersection of food, agriculture, and social justice, having worked with nonprofit farms across the West Coast. He was honored as WaSHI’s 2024 Producer of the Year, recognized for his community-rooted leadership in soil health and organic practices.
Anthony serves as a Transition to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP) mentor, supporting farmers across the region in their shift to certified organic growing. He’s the author of the Fertility Guide Companion and a frequent guest lecturer at seminars and conferences, including the Organic Farm School.
At Oxbow, we’re proud to celebrate Anthony not just for his accolades, but for the grounded, reciprocity-centered philosophy he brings into his practice every day. And honestly, we can’t get enough of his joyful tangents into topics including biomass and lignin content. His curiosity is contagious.
