Join the Milton Historical Society in exploring what Halloween, Thanksgiving, Sukkot, "pumpkin spice," and other fall traditions have in common! As the days grow shorter and brisker, we participate in all sorts of fall traditions and holidays, celebrating ghosts, ancestors, family, abundance, and the coming dark tide of the year -- but what are the roots and histories of these customs? Honoring community, redistributing resources to aid those in need, appeasing the supernatural, and finding warmth in the cold all play their part. From Jack O' Lanterns to pies, from traditional foods themselves to where we eat them, from trick-or-treat to harvest bounty, the many peoples that came to the U.S. brought their customs with them, and those traditions got an American spin while still echoing back to their roots. Folklorist Dr. Kerry Noonan of Champlain College will guide us through a journey of fall traditions, from Halloween to Thanksgiving and beyond!Presenter: Kerry Noonan, Ph.D. in Folklore and Mythology
