The Fairport VFW is organizing a coordinated volunteer day dedicated to honoring and preserving local cemeteries through cleanup, light restoration, and general grounds improvement. Our goal is to ensure these sacred spaces remain dignified, accessible, and properly cared for as a service to the community and to those laid to rest there.Proposed Scope of Work includes:
- Cutting back brush, grass, and small trees
- Cleaning headstones using approved, non-damaging methods
- Resetting or repairing toppled and/or broken headstones (performed by qualified masons)
Volunteers and Partners include:
- VFW Post 8495 – event coordination and oversight
- Local Boy Scout troops – headstone cleaning and light cleanup
- Town of Perinton/Village of Fairport – brush and tree trimming support
- Private masons – resetting and repair of headstones
All work will be conducted respectfully, safely, and in accordance with best practices for cemetery preservation. Headstone cleaning will use biodegradable, pH-neutral products that contain no acids or chlorine.
