See the Cullum family portraits like never before and meet the people behind the frame with historian Dr Pat Murrell—an unmissable opportunity!Step into our galleries with late Stuart and Georgian historian Dr Pat Murrell and uncover the Cullums’ story through their portraiture, as a family and as individuals.
Dr Murrell draws on extensive unpublished research into this fascinating local gentry family who resided at Hardwick and Hawstead from the late 17th until early 20th century– revealing their life, lifestyles and characters.
Discover the Cullums’ wide-ranging interests—from horticulture and botany to travel at home and abroad—brought to life by Dr Murrell through their extensive library, ephemera, commonplace books, and personal letters.
The last heir, George Gery Milner Gibson Cullum, bequeathed to Bury St Edmunds Borough not only a remarkable archive and library, but also the stunning portraits you’ll encounter in the galleries—intended for access and enjoyment - so please come and enjoy!
It’s a rare opportunity to see all of the family’s portraits displayed together—and even rarer to meet the people behind them. Don’t miss this unique chance to connect with history in a truly personal way.
With your ticket, enjoy the freedom to wander through the rest of our galleries after the tour and take in the exhibits at your leisure.
