Face-to-Face with the Filmmaker presents HOMETOWN HOMELESS by Maleah Welsh

HOMETOWN HOMELESS is a collaborative documentary project based in Santa Cruz California and co-directed by Maleah Welsh and Momma Shannan. The culmination of six years of work in the city-sanctioned Benchlands encampment, the project began as an interview and portrait study geared towards highlighting community driven solutions. As the work progressed, it evolved into a short, poetic documentary that explores the meaning of home.

Amid shifting encampments in Santa Cruz’s Potrero district, a circle of women gather to speak of life, love, and loss — holding space for one another amidst uncertainty and upheaval. The film moves alongside unhoused poet Momma Shannan, through quiet moments and everyday rituals, this poetic documentary traces a tender exploration of land, home, and community.

Post-screening of the film, we invite the audience to join in conversation with the filmmakers, Maleah Welsh and Momma Shannan.
