Why Mushrooms? Why This Matters
Mushrooms are the fruiting body of fungi—nature’s hidden magic! While all mushrooms are fungi, not all fungi are mushrooms. Fungi belong to their own incredible biological kingdom, which includes yeasts, molds, lichens, and more. Most of a fungus lives unseen as a sprawling network of thread like strands called hyphae, forming a mass called mycelium.
Fungi are nature’s unsung heroes, playing vital roles in our ecosystems and even our well-being. They are:
- Natural recyclers breaking down organic matter and renewing soil
- Symbiotic partners that support the growth of plants and trees
- Carbon storers helping combat climate change
- Healers with medicinal properties that support our well-being
- Nutrient-rich food sources that nourish our bodies
Why this matters for Black folks:
- Growing our own food is a radical act of self-determination and sovereignty
- Time spent outdoors reconnects us with the abundance and healing power of nature
- Learning about Afro-ecology allows us to reclaim and celebrate Black history, ingenuity, and legacies rooted in the land
- Gathering in beloved community nurtures our emotional well-being and collective joy
About the hosts:
San Leandro 2050 (SL2050) was founded in 2019 by a group of residents with the goal of reducing emissions to slow climate change while helping our community prepare for and recover from disasters such as heat waves, power outages, wildfires, and earthquakes.
