Exploring the Latent Space

We view human intentionality, interpretation and cultural context as central to the artistic process. In a time when AI technologies are rapidly reshaping creative industries, how do we protect the ”human touch?” Generative models find outputs in the latent space, a sea of possibilities in which data points cluster. What is the human equivalent of this space? Lived experience, thoughts, ideas, or emotions?

In this two-hour workshop, led by Laura Herman and Ebba Lindgren, we will explore Generative AI's latent space together, through prompting, talking, and sharing our thoughts. The workshop participants' investigations will directly contribute to the thematics and potential display of an exhibition that is planned to take place in Sweden or the UK.

• Differentiating generative outputs from human-made art.
• Developing strategies for thoughtful creative integrity, i.e., what to outsource to generative tools vs not.
• Learning about the tradeoffs between different generative models and prompting approaches.
• Engaging in a roundtable discussion about the existential questions surrounding generative tools & the future of creativity.
• Creating images for a ”Latent Space Gallery," which will be shown as part of an international exhibit Ebba and Laura are planning together.

This is the first of a series of workshops; a similar workshop will be hosted in London in the autumn, supported by the Bridging Responsible AI Divides (BRAID) UK programme, funded by the Arts & Humanities Research Council.

This workshop is offered free of charge for professionals from across the cultural and creative industries in Skåne, as well as those applying creative skills in other sectors who are interested in AI. You do not need any previous experience in prompting. Please note that you need to be employed/self-employed and based in Skåne to be able to join this class. Dr Laura Herman is interested in how emerging technology influences human artistry & visual culture. She currently serves as Curator of Digital Art at the V&A Museum, where she focuses on contemporary digital practices, and Head of AI Research at Adobe. Laura received her PhD from the University of Oxford, where her dissertation examined the impact of AI systems on global visual cultures. Laura serves as an advisor to the Royal Academy of Arts as well as Utrecht University's Inclusive AI Lab, which she co-founded.

Ebba Lindgren is a Malmö-based designer/ artist whose practice moves between material and concept-driven exploration. She works with furniture and object design, as well as curating and exhibition design. Ebba uses making as a way to think through larger questions about over-consumption and production, identity and value-making. Alongside her design practice, she is increasingly engaged in exploring how AI tools intersect with human creativity, not as a replacement, but as something to question, critique and curiously work alongside. Ebba has an MFA in Industrial Design and co-runs a local freelance office called Streck.

Both Laura and Ebba spoke at the AI & Creativity Seminar at Malmö Konstmuseum in 2025.

• The class is free of charge thanks to funding from the European Social Fund – therefore we need to collect statistics and personal information about all participants and their organisations.
• To be able to participate, you need to be employed or self employed and based in Skåne. Students or unemployed persons cannot participate, unfortunately.
• Once you have registered your interest, we from Media Evolution will contact you shortly to ask an authorized signatory from your company to sign a certificate that confirms your participation. Once the certificate is signed, your seat is confirmed.
