About this Event
This 8 week course is term time only. Tuesday 6pm - 9pm.
"Enrol by 6th September 2026 and save 5% on your course fee — no code needed!"
This 8-week course combines three creative approaches in one, giving you the opportunity to explore and experiment with sketching, drawing and painting. Working with pencils, charcoal and ink pens, you'll develop your drawing skills while also discovering the possibilities of mixed media painting.
Whether you prefer detailed drawing, expressive mark-making or colourful painting techniques, the choice is yours. With guidance and encouragement throughout, you'll build confidence, try new materials and develop your own creative style.
Part 1 -(3 lessons)
We’ll explore how to create realistic textures using a range of pencils, charcoal sticks and fine line pens. Through a series of practical exercises, you'll learn and practise key drawing techniques including shading, feathering, cross-hatching and tonal blending. We’ll also look at form, light and shadow, shape, composition, depth and perspective.
Using these techniques, you'll create drawings of simple 3D forms, still-life subjects, landscapes and townscapes/cityscapes, developing your observation and drawing skills along the way.
Please bring: a selection of pencils, charcoal sticks, fine line pens, a sketchbook and some good-quality drawing paper.

Part 2 – Painting with Acrylics (3 lessons)
In the second part of the course, you'll have the opportunity to explore painting with acrylics (oils are also welcome if preferred). Working from a still-life arrangement, you'll learn techniques to build confidence with colour, composition and brushwork.
Alternatively, you may choose to paint your pet or a favourite animal. If you would like to do this, please bring a good-quality photograph to work from.
Part 3 – Portraits and the Human Figure (2 lessons)
In the final part of the course, we will take a structured approach to drawing and painting the human face. Portraits are one of the most rewarding and engaging subjects for artists, offering endless opportunities to capture character and expression.
We will explore facial shapes, proportions and features, as well as the subtle details that make each face unique. You'll have the option to create a full-face portrait, a three-quarter view or a profile portrait.
You may choose to work from a photograph of yourself, a friend or a family member, so please bring a clear, good-quality photo if you wish to do so.
For those with some portrait experience, there will also be the opportunity to explore drawing and painting the human figure, focusing on movement, posture and expression.
