Exploring Lore: A Storytelling Workshop w/ Christa Lei & Peter Bullough Foundation

Everyone knows of a myth passed down through their family. Maybe you have a special recipe passed down through the generations and are trying to recreate it. Or your uncle had a brush with fame and that’s why he’s LIKE THAT. We come into our world believing certain things about our origin stories and roots. But what if you were allowed permission to remix and rewrite these stories? Through careful readings and discussion, we’ll discuss strategies of sharing lore—whether that be real or speculative. By the end of this writing workshop, attendees should have the beginning stages of a re-written origin story, or borrow techniques to use in a new draft. All genres welcome. No experience needed. Snacks provided!
About the Artist
Christa Lei (they/them) is a writer, editor, educator, facilitator and social/care worker based in New York City. A perpetual student, Christa is a Blackburn Fiction at Randolph College, they are also a proud alum of McCormack Writing Center (fka Tin House,) Kenyon Review Workshops, Storyboard (StoryStudio Chicago) Conference, DISQUIET and more. They are a Creative Non-Fiction editor at Blood Tree Literature and the Community Curator at Anodyne. Born and raised in Hawaii to immigrant Filipino parents, their lived experience as a queer, disabled former healthcare worker and clinical research inform their creative and professional practices--often writing, speaking and educating across multiple fields (especially when it comes to grief, disability justice and alternative relationship styles!) They write into the liminal and in-between spaces, obsesses over the experiences of being an imperfect human in relationship to the self, others, nature and the more than human, and natural grief that occurs from living. Christa has contributed to outlets like Autostraddle and the Matador Network; while their literary work has appeared in The Seventh Wave and Vast Chasm, amongst others. They were a finalist in the 2025 Tennessee Williams Festival fiction contest, and have been awarded residencies by Studio Luce Guatemala and powerHOUSE residency. When not traveling for work or writing, Christa spends their free time exploring what the world has to offer with their spouse and two dogs, Mayo and Kaia Papaya.
