Exploring Layering in Abstract Acrylic Painting with Artist Sheri Peters

Experiment with creating layers, collage, and a variety of mixed media in a process of adding and subtracting while following your intuitive voice and nurturing creative freedom in this two-session workshop on Sept. 24th and Oct. 1st.

Practice a variety of techniques, such as:

o Making tissue papers with acrylic ink and paint

o Work in layers with pastel, pencil, collage and paint to create depth

o Use glazing gloss medium to create translucent layers

o The process of adding and subtracting

o Work with underpaintings, light, focal point and intuition to create something unique

o Gain confidence using stencils and working in layers.

The process of adding and subtracting is a way to follow our intuitive voice to push beyond the first layer into the realm of the unknown, in order to achieve something wonderful and completely unexpected.

We will use our time together to experiment with different techniques that enhance layering in our abstract art pieces. We will focus on ways to start, choosing colors, making decisions while in process and how to follow your own intuitive voice. Projects build on one another to encourage participants to play and to create artwork intuitively. Students will take home smaller warm-up projects plus two layered mixed media paintings and discover new ways to continue a painting that they may have stashed in their closet.

Sheri Peters is an abstract mixed media painter inspired by the beauty of nature. Influences behind her work include European artists MC Escher, Gustav Klimt and Salvador Dali. Drawn to surrealism, her intuition is seen through symbolism, pattern and line-work emerging from the canvas as abstracts, nature, people, and animals. Broken down into simple shapes, repetitive patterns and suggestions she captures the essence of a subject through a variety of added mediums, shapes, and glazes. Sessions: Wednesday, Sept. 24th, 1pm - 4pm and Wednesday, Oct. 1st, 1pm - 4pm.

Tickets: $110, with a 10% discount for GPAG Members; plus a $55 supply cost, payable directly to the instructor at the beginning of the first session.

Students should bring: Mixed media paper (for warm-ups, how to use supplies) and an apron (optional). Students are also encouraged to bring an old canvas they can experiment on if they are fast painters and there is time at the end of our second class. All other supplies are included with the supply cost.
