About this Event
Join Abri's Community Development Officer Cara Headon, in collaboration with the Southampton Institute for Arts and Humanities (SIAH), for a guided heritage walking tour through Mansbridge, a unique residential area shaped by visionary planning and community spirit. This engaging tour will explore the origins of the estate, from its early history to the post-war development led by the Swaythling Housing Society.
You will learn how the area's roads got their names, uncover stories of the people who shaped the neighbourhood, and discover the influence of local architect Herbert Collins, who not only designed the estate but founded the Swaythling Housing Society to promote affordable, well-designed homes.
The walk will take 1.5 hours and highlight key architectural features, green spaces, and the social history that makes Mansbridge a fascinating example of 20th-century housing development. Whether you're a local resident or simply curious about Southampton's hidden histories, this tour offers a fresh perspective on how thoughtful design and community values have shaped the area. It builds on research undertaken this year with University of Southampton researchers, focusing on pride, heritage literacy and place perception.
All are welcome. No prior knowledge of Mansbridge is needed.
Comfortable footwear is recommended, as well as dressing according to the weather forecast.
