Latest New Zealand Immigration Updates
Get an overview of important immigration developments affecting international students, graduates and skilled migrants, including:

• Student work rights – eligible international students can work up to 25 hours per week during study under changes introduced from November 2025.

• Pathway Student Visa improvements – greater flexibility was introduced in July 2026, including expanded lower-level study pathways and additional flexibility for English-language and progression pathways.

• Post-Study Work Visa developments – eligible graduates may currently receive post-study work rights of up to 3 years, depending on their qualification and study.

• Graduate Diploma opportunities – from 16 November 2026, Post-Study Work Visa eligibility is being extended to certain students completing an NZQCF Level 7 Graduate Diploma who also hold a bachelor’s degree and meet the applicable requirements.

• New Short-Term Graduate Work Visa – scheduled to open from 16 November 2026, providing eligible graduates with up to 6 months of open work rights to seek employment and explore longer-term work visa options.

• Skilled Migrant Category changes – significant Skilled Migrant Category residence changes took effect from 24 August 2026, including revised qualification settings, skilled work experience pathways, wage assessment rules and new Trades and Technician and Skilled Work Experience pathways.
