Expedition Skills Camp - Assateague Island National Seashore

Join us on Maryland's Eastern Shore for our first Expedition Skill Camp. This multiday skills camp will be run by Will from GetOutdoors and Brett from Adventure Otaku. This is for the novice touring paddler, who wants to increase their skill set, so they can begin kayak camping on their own.
The Expedition Skills Camp will run over a weekend - Friday morning to Sunday afternoon - and will be held at Assateague Island National Seashore, on Maryland's Eastern Shore.
In addition we will host several pre-trip meetings/lessons to get everyone ready and up to speed before the trip.
The scheduled dates are Friday- Sunday, October 2-4, 2026 and again Nov 13-15, 2026. Although, we plan to meet and car camp in the park on Thursday night, so we can get an early start Friday morning.
During the entirety this camp we will cover the following topics:
Gear Selection
Planning and packing food
Packing boats
Safety gear
Risk Management (on and off water)
Route planning
On-water navigation
Proper camp selection and set-up
Tides/Weather and planning.
Paddling in conditions
Paddle stroke refinement
We will also be able to work into the schedule, topics that you want covered as well.
Our plan is to travel and camp from boats, on the Assateague sound side. This will give us the ability in real time to practice moving as a group, adjusting to weather, tides, and other unpredictable variables in Kayak travel. We will paddle to a basecamp and conduct day trips/ lessons out into the bay, staying on the sound side.
It also means Brett and I will be able to work on paddle skills and techniques with the entire group, while on the water. Forward stroke, edging, turning strokes, linking stokes, rescues, etc.
We will provide the group with a welcome dinner Thursday night, and breakfast on Friday morning, prior to getting on the water. All other meals will be in the field and must be provided by participants.
The cost for this weekend event will be $625 per participant, and will be limited to 8 participants per trip. Thursday nights camping fees are included in the trip cost. There is also a $25 per vehicle fee to enter the park, this entrance fee is not included.
You will need to provide your own touring kayak, PFD, paddle, and skirt, plus your own camping gear (tent, sleep system, and cook gear), as well as your meals while we are in the field.
Currently, the following slots are available for each trip:
