DESCRIPTION:

This presentation will provide a comprehensive guide to designing and specifying expansion joints within the building envelope, with a particular emphasis on ensuring watertight and effective transitions ensuring continuity to air barriers and other building materials. We’ll explore the essential role of expansion joints in accommodating building movement, preventing stress, and enhancing durability. Attendees will gain insights into best practices for detailing expansion joints, selecting appropriate materials, and understanding the interplay between different materials and systems at transition points. Through case studies and practical examples, we’ll highlight key considerations for designing joints that deliver both structural integrity and aesthetic continuity, ensuring long-term performance in complex architectural environments.

OBJECTIVES:

• Analyze how watertight, energy efficient, fire-rated expansion joints are the consequence of aprocess in which we: Design, Detail, Specify, Bid, Erect, Manufacture, & Install in 3-D.

• Be familiar with product technologies and how to apply them.
• Why it is critical to require certified performance reports in your specifications.
• Detailing and documenting air barrier continuity at key transitions (i.e. roof to wall) to ensure air and water tightness.

*Physical transition examples will accompany the presentation for a real-life view of how they are factory fabricated to reduce time and potential errors in the field.*
