“‘Existential Crisis’ represents inner conflict, characterized by the impression that life lacks meaning, and confusion about one's personal identity. By definition, these feelings are accompanied by anxiety and stress, often to such a degree that they disturb one's normal functioning in everyday life. Emotional components can be emotional pain, despair, helplessness, guilt, anxiety, or loneliness. In my newest works, I have tried to not only express these negative emotions, but offer a glimpse of a solution and positive resolve. These new works are both abstract and loosely representational, with the addition of woven wire to depict intermingled emotions as well as a mending of the soul.” - Judy Vienneau
With a background infused by both the linear qualities of graphic illustration and the three-dimensional qualities of traditional clay modeling, Judy began in the late 1990’s to create her first wire sculpture. These early pieces, inspired by Alexander Calder, depicted portraits and figures of animals and humans. Wall pieces emulate “drawing in space”, combining two and three dimensions, as the wire forms come away from the wall in relief. Concurrently, Judy developed mixed media pieces that made statements about society, politics and culture. She used clay and casting, found objects, metal, collage, fiber, mosaic and more in an interactive way to get her concepts and message across.
The exhibition “Existential Crisis – Abstractions with Wire” will be at GCAA’s new exhibition venue at 5546 1st Ave. N., St. Petersburg, Sept. 13 – October 26, 2024. The location is also home to Judy’s new art studio, where the most recent artwork was created. The exhibition will consist of her new series of work in fiber and wire, combined with mixed media artwork created within the last two years following the same theme. An opening reception will be held on Saturday September 21st, 5-8pm, along with the Grand Opening Celebration of GCAA Educational Center/Artists in Residence gallery and studios.
