Lisa Bate and Monique Barnett
Saturday 18 October – 29 November
Through Currents brings together two artists whose practices engage with contemporary issues related to waters. One artist is grounded in site-specific local waterways and the ways humans interact with and influence these natural spaces; the other explores watery embodiment, reflecting on what it means to understand ourselves as bodies of water.
Lisa Bate’s art glass responds to the environmental impacts affecting the Auckland Tāmaki Makaurau waterways. Residing by the Tahiki River, Bate’s focus has been the freshwater bodies of the Franklin Region currently undergoing restoration. Glass has been used to demonstrate how contaminants enter our waterways, then get distributed by moving currents.
Monique Barnett explores water as a metaphor for the human condition—fluid, shifting, and interconnected. Through painting and collage, Barnett investigates how bodies relate to space, movement, and transformation. Influenced by feminist post-human thought, Barnett considers how watery embodiment challenges individualism and highlights our political and ecological entanglements.
Bate and Barnett both employ materials that explore their investigations of water. Their work highlights our interconnectedness and the dynamic effects on life that flows on from our relationship to waters.
